It sounded interesting at the time! I really wanted to continue working in glowy things and I knew that a lot of small crystals can do odd things when they interact with light, so when I got the chance to do a PhD in crystals I thought this would be a great chance to do some of this work. It didn’t quite work out to plan because I became far more interested in why crystals grow in a particular way and how we can control that – something that would be very valuable in lots of ways if we could, not just for the drug making companies, but even when it comes to stopping lime scale in your washing machine! I really enjoy what I do and still think I have a lot to learn and even more to find out.
