Hiya. I really want to research environmental chemistry because to me the natural world around us is very valuable and also at risk. It is important to me to feel I am contributing in some positive way to the future for humans and doing something good no matter how small a part I play. This is called leaving a legacy. My research doesn’t have to be big impact, but it does have to be a step in the right direction: that way it is something I can believe in. When you work on one project for 3 years you need to believe in it!

Of course there are other environmental research projects out there than the one I am now doing. One other topic I was very interested in when I was looking for PhDs was making new plastics which were better for the environment. I met one researcher who used waste starch from the Walkers Crisp factory to makenew kinds of plastic. He could also make plastic out of banana skins (guess what colour that was!).

I would like to continue in using science to help in art and history conservation, I’ve got a real kick out of doing the work on the books and finding out new information that will be useful not only in learning about how they were made but how to keep them for future generations.

I think like Rowena says, it is good to be able to use your knowledge and skills to give something back for future generations so they can have to opportunity to do their own experiments.

I really want to be able to image things inside the body using fluorescence – however, for the light to go through our skin we need to use near-infrared light… which at the moment is quite difficult to detect
