  Earlier writing tools were bits of rock and charcoal and chalk. Have you tried writing on rocks with stones and other bits of rock? Lead pencils developed before the graphite ones we use now but later than the stone age I think!

Thanks! also, how do paints appear different colours?

  The pigments in the paint absorb the light, but only some parts of it. What color we see is the light that isn’t absorbed but reflected into your eyes 🙂
