I don’t get a stitch often because I swim and cycle everyday so I’m always stretching about and moving. No one really knows why stitches happen. Maybe, when we are working too hard, lots of blood can’t get back into the parts where we need it. If there isn’t enough blood going into our middles (where we breathe) because it is all going to our tired legs, then it starts to ache. Other people think that it could be because we are moving around so much we irritate all of the cells near to our tummies and hups. Friction made from all of the movement we do during exercises rubs on the insides of our bodies and maches us ache. You can avoid it by stretching properly and warming up!

When your body is trying to do exercise, it has to use oxygen when you breathe to react with molecules in your muscles. If your fit, and you get enough oxygen inside you, you are doing what’s called aerobic respiration – this means that your body can burn energy at the same rate that oxygen is being delivered from the air, into your lungs into your blood, then to your muscles.

When you run too hard, or don’t get enough oxygen, you body goes into anaerobic respiration. This means your body isn’t getting enough oxygen from the air to your muscles. This leads to a build up of a chemical called ‘lactic acid’ which irritates your muscles and hurts – this is what a stitch is! It’s a build up of lactic acid in your stomach muscles because your doing too much and not getting in enough oxygen to your muscles.

Jessica and Andrew have explained this really well. The lactic acid is also really high in sweat. You measure this as way to monitor how well your exercise regime is working. Very useful to rowers and long distance runners, etc.
