This is tricky. Atoms are mainly space and contain lots of charges called electrons. The electrons allow atoms to stick together and bonds to form. When two atoms come together they share electrons or give them to each other. Whilst it is mainly space, so many of these atoms stick together in small enough volumes that there is ‘material’ there- there is a table when lot of molecules of wood come together. There is water when enough hydrogens and oxygens stick together. The middle, the ‘mass centre’ is the nucleus, and all the nuclei stick together and give us the ‘mass’ of the solid or liquid or gas we’re making. the electrons move around the outside in the space or clouds.
