• Question: Are you sad about the end of the i'm a scientist?

      I’m really sad. It has genuinely been the highlight of my last two weeks- and I’ve been so busy anyway! I’ve been to four schools this week, had about 5 meetings and also presented my research at an important conference. It’s been crazy trying to fit anything in, but the questions from you have been the best part of it all. If I win, I will come and visit every school next term- and hopefully get you all to come into Imperial College for a day of science and fun. We can have a picnic in Hyde Park, then finish the day in the Science Museum, which is just next door!

      I am actually pretty gutted! The online chats have been absolutely manic but really good fun, and pitching responses to the questions in a non-jargon way has also been challenging. Something scientists don’t do enough, in my opinion, is try and make what they do understandable to other people. I’m a scientist takes that problem to it’s extreme! But the thing that’s amazing about it is the passion and questions that people have when they ask us things about our projects is great, and actually means that I think that you guys have a better idea of what we do for a living than, say, our parents or families.

      This has been such a good experience I think I’m going to enlist to do more outreach in schools from now on and try and get students excited and passionate about science too!
