Hi Emily, I’m not sure if science would necessarily help you to get a job as a beautician but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be interested in science! There is lots of science involved with things that beauticians do, and I don’t mean all the made up science in shampoo adverts! Off the top of my head the kinds of things I’m thinking about are why does bleached hair sometimes go green when you go swimming; how does nail varnish remover works; why it can be dangerous to use tanning booths a lot. Also, companies that make beauty products often seem to use fake science to sell their products so if you know some science then you won’t get ripped off by them! 😀
So some evolutionary biologists proposes that there are certain physical characteristics that make one more beautiful – for a woman these might include being young (female attractiveness peaks at about 17-21 then declines with age), having feminine features, wide hips, smooth skin, big eyes. These physical things are probably signs that the woman is healthy and can bear healthy children – and apparently this forms a fundamental component of what heterosexual men are attracted to.
By studying what makes woman attractive, why this makes women attractive, and how certain chemicals (like the pigments in lipstick) can mimic natural signs of healthiness or ability to bear children one could become a more effective beautician. For example it has been shown that the more oestrogen a woman has, the larger her eyes and the fuller her lips, and the lips can swell as a response to sexual stimulation – possibly as a mating signalling mechanism. By knowing how attraction works, you could possibly use your make-up craft to mimic these natural signs of healthiness, or sexual arousal, to make your clients look more beautiful.
