The Kyoto Protocol was a 1997 international agreement to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions to prevent climate change from becoming dangerous.

A protocol is a set of rules or guidelines to do something that everyone agrees to. Back in 1997, lots of country representatives met in Kyoto (Japan) in a yearly conference on climate change. During this conference all member countries agreed, for the first time that: 1. Global warming is real 2.Global warming is largely because of man made emissions and 3. Every member country should make significant steps to reduce their emissions to below 1992 levels (when the climate committee was formed)

The Kyoto Protocol was the first attempt the world had in controlling the green house gas emissions around world. Unfortunately, not all countries signed upto it as they felt it would impact on the economics – surprise surprise the biggest polluter USA did not support it! COP 21 in Paris replaced the Protocol

Think the others have covered this well! The Kyoto Protocol was agreed by a group of countries, and sets compulsory limits on greenhouse gas emissions to help reduce the effects of global warming.
