I am not an physicist, so I cannot give a very good answer to this question! But the whole universe was created in the Big Bang, and all the galaxies (and other parts of the universe) were formed just after the big bang when everything was expanding from one tiny point. This is science and time on a whole other scale from the tiny micro-organisms I work with!
So our galaxy (the milky way) was made millions of years after the big bang. What happened after all the elements exploded out of the big bang is that they started to clump together, and get very very hot. These hot elements fused together and formed stars. Our galaxy has about 250 BILLION stars, many a lot like our sun. Lots of scientist think our galaxy has a black hole in the centre of it, which is a star that is so big and heavy and the gravity is so strong not even light can leave it!
Our galaxy is so big and exciting and we have so much to learn about it… but our galaxy is only one of BILLIONS of galaxy in the whole universe! I can’t even wrap my head around how big that is!
