        Hi,

I suppose that would be during the Industrial Revolution in the 1850s – so a very long time ago.

During that time we were developing new materials, or faster ways of making things and we didn’t care how much chemicals we were putting up a chimney or putting into the ground. We also had to dig up coal to fire the machinery.

We also used coal in our homes and this was very dirty – London had a big problem in the 1950s because of all the coal fires. We also have petrol and diesel cars that put a lot of pollutants into the air (although we can’t see them).

        Does that answer your question?
