Hi there, great question! We don’t know for sure but scientists think there are around 50-70 active volcanoes at the minute. Scientists think there are about 1500 volcanoes on Earth that they know have erupted at some time over the last 10,000 years and could possibly erupt again. Not many of them are likely to erupt again – volcanoes can be active, dormant or extinct. Dormant volcanoes aren’t active now but they could be at some point – a bit like sleeping volcanoes! Extinct volcanoes have no chance of erupting again. There are also underwater volcanoes.
Some of the most active volcanoes are Mount Kilauea in Hawaii and Mount Etna in Italy. ?
