Lava is rock that has been melted. It is very difficult to melt rocks, because they are so strong . It only happens at very, very hot temperatures. Rocks can melt deep beneath Earth’s surface (100 miles or more underground) where the temperature is hot enough to melt the rocks. This melted rock can sometimes make its way to the surface and escape through volcanic eruptions!

Geologists (they’re scientists who study what Earth is made up of) use the word “magma” for molten rock that is still underground, and the word “lava” once it has erupted onto the surface. Hot lava can be up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit!
