Hi there! Like humans and animals, plants need both water and nutrients (food) to survive. Plants need air light, warmth and water and food to be healthy. As they grow they can start making their own food through something called photosynthesis. A plant’s food is very different from our food. They use energy from the sun to turn a gas called carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and sugars. Without plants we wouldn’t have any oxygen to breathe! Plants have three important parts – the roots, the stem and the leaves. The stem holds the plant up, the roots spread out to get water from the soil and the leaves are where the plant makes its food.
