Question: have you ever thought about going to work with a different science? or not working the sciences at all? what made you decide you would chose your job?
I’ve considered moving into pharma / crop science or even food science, as the techniques and scientific concepts that I use day to day are almost identical to those in those industries. If I moved out of science, it would be to spend more time doing music, e.g. conducting choirs.
I’ve worked in pharmaceuticals before and that was pretty interesting, I do sometimes think about whether I would like to work in that industry again. I think even if I was to move out of a lab based role, I would still like to work in the scientific industry! As for choosing my job, I like to think that battery science chose me! I was just looking for a job after university and a job in batteries came up but now I love it 😀
In the past I have sometimes considered doing a different scientific job.I always wanted to be a forensic scientist but life took me in a different direction. I think if I was to change jobs now I would possibly do something different although I don’t really know what that would be!
Yes – I thought about doing physics and serious surface science but (while interesting) is a bit of a niche job market. I have also thought about working outside of science but I don’t think I would enjoy it as much (in a sustained way) – I certainly wouldn’t have learned as much!
In terms of job – combination of necessity (I needed the money after being a student for so long and it needed to be in the UK for family reasons) and what I was trained in and good at – I got a job in catalytic chemistry/science and it’s exciting – always learning new things and working with smart people.
I originally wanted to go into biomedical sciences during sixth form and it was my main goal to get into, but I didn’t quite get the grades required and did cellular and molecular biology instead. Looking back, I’m glad that I ended up doing cellular and molecular biology instead because I found that I really enjoyed microbiology and it has also opened me up to many more opportunities that have gotten me to where I am now!
