There are very few secondary schools in The Gambia and parents have to pay to send their children to school so only those that have enough money go to school. Often families can only afford to pay for one child of the family to go to school. The Open Day would bring all ages of children to the event and help educate all of them regardless of whether they have enough money to go to school.
In a way yes. My idea for what to do with the £500, will bring a secondary school together with it’s feeder primary schools to cooperate in a Big Science Experiment. Furthermore, when those children move up to the secondary school, they will hopefully be a little bit more switched on in science classes, thanks to the experience of science I and my science resources gave them in primary school.
Yes, if I win the money i will use it to help fund a project that invites local underpriveleged secondary school students visit the University of Manchester to see what scientific research is all about and get hands on experience. Hopefully this will give them experiences that they would never otherwise get, and inspire them to continue studying science in the future (and become the research scientists of tomorrow!).
we( at nottingham trent biosciences) already do a lot with secondary schools..whether giving talks, organising conferences for them to attend or runnig n practicals giving people an idea of what science and research is about
Secondary schools are great…people are keen and not hung up on appearing too cool to take part
