I think being an organ donor is hugely important and something that everyone should consider. I would be delighted if I was able to let someone else to live or have a better life if something happened to me.

I am a registered organ donor. If someone in my family needed a kidney I would gladly give them one of mine. I’m very fit and healthy and I take care to look after my body so my organs are probably in quite good condition! If something happens to me and my organs could be used to give people a new lease of life then I would be very happy. I don’t care what organs they take. As far as i’m concerned, it’s just a body and I’d rather it was useful than go to waste! I wouldn’t mind my body being used in medical schools, for dentistry and medical students to learn.

When i worked in Canada it was in a lab who studied transplantation. So for me, I think we should use the opt out system like they do in Spain for consent to remove organs. In this system you have to say that you don’t want to donate your organs rather than the system here where we have to say we do want to donate. This can put strain on family members to make the decision for you, althought the law changed recently that mean a donors wishes take priority over those of next of kin.

Its important to carry a donor card and inform your family of your wishes.

I think they are very noble, but I would understand if someone didn’t want to be a donor. I think that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and beliefs, especially for something as sensitive as this.

Did you know that that even if you want to be an organ donor, you can’t always….if you have died of some disease like cancer, then you could pass it on to the patient who gets your organ, so they won’t allow it.

I certainly respect people who give or accept organ donations. However, this is not something I would go for… either way.

I agree with Tim, that it is extremely important to let your family members and close friends know your thoughts on the matter so that people are not left with agonising choices in the event that they have to decide on your behalf.
