Some of my favourite things to look at under the electron microscope are things that I’ve made myself. For example, I’ve made microgels, which are tiny spherical particles with diameters that are less than a thousandth of a millimetre. To make them you need to use a chemical reaction. To the eye they just look like a solution, like water or milk, but under the microscope you can see their structure – you can see that they are tiny balls. Knowing that you’ve made them yourself is particularly rewarding.
