Giving a bone marrow transplant is fairly easy and doesn’t make you sick. It does require a needle and some anaesthetic – a bit like going to the dentist. People who need a bone marrow transplant are usually very sick, however. Its often done for different types of leukaemia and it basically means giving someone a whole new immune system. If it goes well this can cure the cancer and allow the new immune system to attack any tumour cells left over. Sometimes the new bone marrow attacks the person its been given to, though, and they can get sick all over again.
