Great question! cells have evolved to work best around 37 degrees C. If they get too hot or too cold the proteins they rely on (like enzymes) don’t work as well. This is thought to be why we get a temperature when we’re sick – it might make life a bit more difficult for the bacterial cells to work. They have a preferred temperature to work at, too.
Cells do keep working at lower/higher temperatures though, just a little less efficiently. There are even cells that have a natural ‘antifreeze’ and can survive being frozen down to absolute zero (less than -270C!). other bacterial cells have evolved to live in very hot conditions – a bacteria from hot springs can work at almost 100 degrees!
