Cells have a ‘kit’ inside them that controls when and how they should divide. This ‘kit’ is formed of proteins and small molecules that interact with different parts of the cell. Firstly, they check if the environment is OK for the cell to divide (does it have the right amount of nutrients?), and if so, the cell starts division. During division, the nucleus tears apart into two ‘halves’ containing the same genetic information, and the cell body constricts from the middle, creating the two new daughter cells. Just to let you know, we still don’t understand all the events that happen during cell division (which are much more that I’ve tried to explain here!)
