I like to think I’m already trying to help the world. Chemistry is usually very bad for the environment and my work is all aimed to making it better! I use sunlight to do reactions with molecules from plants so that we could maybe in future use less fossil fuels.
So my area if science is trying to help covert harmful gases in the air like methane into useful chemicals that we can use as fuels or to make bigger more useful molecules like plastics or medicines (at the moment we use oil for this). It’s quite a long way to go through. Socially I would like to more to help homeless people I have always been so lucky that my family can always provide a safe place for me to stay and feel sad that it is not the same for some other people.
Within my skillset? Probably similar to something already said, reduce or eliminate reliance on oil, pretty much the endgoal of my research.
In general though all scientists are helping the world by learning more about it, which is ultimately going to help humanity simply by gaining new knowledge.
If I may look a bit further forward though, I would love to be part of a terraforming project, perhaps on Mars, perhaps elsewhere. Relieving pressure on Earth and allowing for our species to exist over the long term is a worthy goal in my eyes.
