There are many trades in the Army that people can learn and these can be useful in later life.

I think it’s a great career for those who choose it! Whether that is straight from school or after a degree. They are brave people indeed and I don’t think I could do it so I have great respect for them. My dad was in the RAF so I have some experience with the forces.

Can only agree with the previous responses.

My biology teacher at secondary school had come from the RAF, after ignoring biology all through school. She had concentrated on maths/physics and then gone straight into the RAF. I believe she then did a biology degree with their help in order to retrain when she was leaving.

As we’re here discussing science, the military takes a very prominent role in a number of areas, and not just the obvious ones. The collaboration with Cranfield University is an entire university campus based on defence and security. There is also the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) – they are a civilian organisation but are run as part of the Ministry of Defence.

My brother-in-law is in the army reserves and loves it. He’s learnt a lot of skills (but it’s also pretty hard work). I am proud that our army is aimed towards peacekeeping and that we are pretty careful before deploying troops. If you are thinking of it as a career they can sometimes fund you though university if you do something like engineering or you might want to consider joining a local cadets group (army, sea or air cadets).
