      Joule and it is given the symbol J. Named after the scientist James Prescott Joule.

    You can also measure energy in calories (as in food, which a kcal or 4182 J is the energy required to heat 1 kg of water by 1 degree C), electron volts which is the kinetic energy of 1 electron accelerated by 1 Volt.
