Yes, although it was a bit chaotic as there were lots of people in my classes including in A Levels! I did chemistry and biology, and it was very different to what I study science-wise now. Most biology was ecology, plant biology, whereas now I only study humans. Chemistry was an essential for medicine applications but I use it more now in science. The thing I probably use the most is maths and stats, and I did maths A Level thinking ‘how will this ever be useful!’ – very, as it turns out! I enjoyed understanding how things worked though, and that’s what’s cool about science.

What you enjoy or not may change over time so I find it useful to keep an open mind.

Science was not my forte while in school. Initially, science wasn’t my favourite subject; it was a steep learning curve, and other subjects interested me more.

However, I became more familiar with biology, chemistry and physics, with help and guidance of excellent teachers and classmates I had. They taught me to keep asking questions and think cogently. Science eventually became my favourite subject in my last two years of high school.

I enjoyed some bits of science more than others in school. I didn’t like remembering all the different reactions in chemistry, but enjoyed the practical element (especially the screaming jelly baby experiment my chemistry teacher showed us). With biology, I was more interested in the treating diseases and understanding them rather than the plant biology and human anatomy, which I found a bit boring. And with physics… well, I didn’t like physics as much as the other two so dropped it after GCSE.

School is definitely a good place and time to figure out what subjects you like, or even which parts of subjects you like. After school, you can drop all the bits you don’t like and focus on what you do enjoy at university.

I enjoyed biology but I struggled with chemistry and physics for some reason they just didn’t click with me.
