I’m happy if I can add something new to the total knowledge of the human race. It’s also really really good to show people something new.

In an ideal world it would be great to be able to one day treat every single patient and get them leaving hospital disease free or at least on the way to living disease free. Sadly this isn’t the case at the moment so all I can do in my role is provide the pathologists with the best quality work I can as quickly as I can so the patient can start having treatment or at least their disease/condition can start to be managed.

I ask myself this question a lot! Because I study microalgae, which could be used as fuel, feed for animals, and medicines/health supplement, it is really exciting thinking about how the future looks! We are running out of fossil fuels which cause terrible pollution when burned. So if I could help improve the knowledge we have about microalgae to make it easier for them to be used as fuel, I would be really happy. I believe microalgae are really promising in creating a clean and green environment and I hope my research will help that become a reality in the future

My work looks at understanding what goes wrong in the brains of people who have a disease called Multiple Sclerosis. What happens, is our immune system, (the bit of our body that fights off coughs and colds) accidently attacks our brain, hurting it, meaning it can’t work properly. By understanding what goes wrong, we can then work to try and fix it to treat/cure people! That would be amazing!! I would love to help work towards this.

So many people are at risk from natural disasters, people’s homes and countries are destroyed by tsunamis or crushed by landslides, and geologists can help them! What I work towards is making the planet a safe place to live. I imagine you’ve seen a picture of the leaning Tower of Pisa, imagine if your house was beneath that!

My main goal is to really contribute something to those people who can’t help themselves in the same way, education is not equal across the globe, and I think that those who can help have a responsibility to do what they can to improve the lives of those in need and not just those who can afford to pay for it. Many companies support people who want to take voluntary time (I get extra paid leave!) to help those in need and there are huge communities to support those who need it (such as Engineers Without Borders, and Geology for Global Development).
