I’m not really sure as I don’t and never have studied the brain in this way, so my guess would be that emotions are the result of loads of chemical reactions going on in your body. So to kind of answer your question I would say it’s how the cells interact with each other and produce chemicals which then cause other chemical reactions which then results in an emotion. I’m sure Ella would be the best person to answer and I would definitely trust her answer over mine as mine is just an educated guess at best!
Emotions are the combination of how we’re feeling inside and what’s happening in the world outside our body, for example … something will usually happen to make us feel a certain way! When the cells in our brain are working they release something called a neurotransmitter … this is a chemical that works to activate the cell next to it – a bit like a big chain. When lots of brain cells (these are called neurons) are activated 3 things happen … 1) they change how we’re feeling in our body. For example, if you’re feeling sad … you might get tears in your eyes! Or if you’re feeling happy … you’ll smile! 2) you’ll start to think differently … if you’re scared you’ll start looking for other things that might be dangerous and 3) you’ll behave differently than normal … if you’re angry you might want to shout at somebody or fight. It’s the combination of these three things that gives us emotions from our cells!
