Rory Miles answered on 11 Mar 2014:

It was more luck than anything else. At university, I quickly realised that I was most interested in the bugs that could infect people. I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to work in a laboratory in a hospital, where I worked to identify if people were infected with viruses (these are the smallest of all bugs and aren’t actually alive at all!). This sparked my passion for this subject, and I have continued in my research and career focusing on this area.
