Carbon monoxide (CO) is very different to carbon dioxide (CO2). Carbon monoxide does not play a large part in global warming but carbon dioxide does play a large part. Carbon dioxide levels have risen in the atmosphere because of humans burning fuels to keep our houses warm and our cars running. CO2 is a “greenhouse gas” which means it traps heat in the atmosphere and this warms the climate. The higher levels of CO2 in the atmosphere today mean that our climate is becoming warmer.
