The brain is a small but complex computer: it contains 100 billion (that’s 100, 000, 000, 000) nerve cells, which pass electrical currents and signals to other nerves and the tissues and organs that make up the body. The brain does some things all the time, including:
      – making sure your heart keeps beating
      – keeping your digestion working
      – keeping you breathing
      – making sure your mouth is moist (salivation)
      – controlling your body temperature
      – making pupils of you eye the right size
      – swallowing.
The brain does this and other things by continually sending out messages to all the different parts of the body. It’s absolutely amazing, have a look at http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/whoami/findoutmore/yourbrain/howdoesyourbrainwork.aspx for more information.
