It is likely that we could do this using the technology we already have, but there is massive amounts of discussion within the scientific community about whether we should do this. Cloning is simply having a genetically identical (the data that directs your bodies growth) version of another living thing. I have not worked in cloning before, but I’ll try and tell you what I understand. The discussion currently (and likely to stay) is that it definitely should not occur. The first cloned animal (Dolly the Sheep) was very ill and died very young. This is because the way that cloning is carried out causes a lot of mutation (this is change in the genes of the clone). Therefore, even if something is genetically identical, it doesn’t look the same as the original, due to this mutation (change). This is why identical twins look very similar (they are genetically identical), but there are differences between them. If someone were to clone themselves, the human born could be very ill. It is unlikely that scientists will ever get the permission to clone a human for this reason (it would be very cruel), unless a less cruel method is determined. Even then, there could be further debate about whether we should clone a human and what the good things about it would be.
