No human being has ever landed on mars.

There are lots of reasons for this. One of these reasons is that it would take such a long time to get there, about 6-9 months. There are no space shuttles at the moment that would be able to carry human beings for that long- and where would we keep all of our rubbish?!

Another reason that no human has ever landed on mars is that once they got there it would be very hard for them to get back. In order to launch a space shuttle you need lots of fuel, and this fuel is very heavy and dangerous so there is only so much a space shuttle can carry… At the moment there is no way for a space shuttle to carry enough fuel with it to mars to be able to get back to earth again.

Once the astronauts were on their way to mars there would be no turning back! Getting in touch with the home planet would be very difficult as it would take so long to transmit messages the 35 million miles from mars to earth. This means that astronauts would only have the people they were with in the tiny space shuttle for company. People think that this will be one of the hardest things to protect astronauts from if technology ever allows us to send people to mars.

How do you think you would cope being in one room with the same three people for almost a year? Would you make really good friends or would you miss your family back on earth?
