      The blood flow to the brain is around 750ml (millilitres) per minute. This is 15% of the total volume of blood pumped out by the heart every minute. The brain needs a lot of blood to make sure there is enough oxygen, glucose and other nutrients reaching nerve cells.

      Reduction in blood flow to the brain is seen in Alzheimer’s disease and this may be one of the factors that leads to nerve cells dying.
