Depression can affect levels of chemicals in the brain, in particular seratonin, or rather it is more likely that changes in the levels of these chemicals leads to feelings of depression in the person.
What’s more difficult to tell is how these levels come to change in the first place. People are looking in to this at the moment, but currently no-one’s really sure. My research is trying to find out whether smoking cannabis can lead to people being more likely to get depression, but I don’t know the answer yet.
