I work with some quite nasty chemicals, some of which could make you very ill, or even give you cancer if you ingested them. We always have to wear lab coats and gloves, and sometimes work in the fume hood to stop these getting into our systems. I also work with mice and rats, so there is a danger that they could bite us, or that we could become allergic to them. I have to go for tests every few months to check that my lungs are working OK and that they’re not being affected by any allergies to the animals

I guess I could get bitten as I would with hamsters but generally they just like to taste me and lick me (they are very cute). I work with electrical equipment so I could get electrocuted. I do some writing so I could get paper cuts. I use some nasty chemicals for cleaning and staining cells so if I drank them it wouldn’t be too good. I use a piece of kit called a bomb calorimeter so called because it creates little explosions in it to count calories (energy) in things and If I wasn’t trained to use it or didn’t use it properly It could make a big bang probably through the ceiling. There are Bunsen burners in the lab so the place could go on fire. Like you working in your lab you wear a lab coat, gloves, glasses and use things properly and it’s pretty safe really!

I use a lot of very toxic chemicals to block brain cell activity but they are only dangerous if I drank them, and obviously I am not that crazy.

Hello! There are no real dangers involved in my work. As all my participants are human we do have to apply to the ethics board to get permission for the experiment that we want to run – this is to make sure that we are not conducting a ‘mad scientist’ type of experiment 🙂
