Yes! There are many ways to improve our memory and the best way is to use it! You have probably heard of things like ‘brain gym’ – these are good techniques for exercising the brain. You can also do memory tasks with your friends by giving them a sequence of numbers (6, 9, 12, 4, 6, 8, 3) or letters (A, G, H, J, K, W, Z) and asking them to remember the sequence in the right order! This can be a lot of fun and certainly exercises your memory.
Physical activity also works well by increasing blood circulation to the brain, getting lots of sleep so that the memory system can rest, and also keeping calm and relaxed because the brain doesn’t like to be stressed.
our memory works best when we are generally healthy. Eating well, drinking plenty of water, getting enough exercise and sleep all help. refreshing your memory is the best way to remember thing, the more we access thoughts or memories and recall information the more likely we are to remember it. If we sit beside the same person every day we will know their name but if we met someone one a year ago and then see them on the street we might not remember their name (unless we have used it between then and now)
Keeping your brain active is good! But you should be doing that everyday anyway… reading/studying etc. People remember things in different ways-some people have a photographic memory and remember every detail on a page, others need to draw diagrams of the key facts as they remember things better visually… if I need to remember something in detail I write it down exactly once, and then bullet points of the key facts next. But everyone is different so find a way that works best for you 🙂
