As part of my Chemistry degree I got the option of going and working at a real company in my 3rd year before finishing my final year back at university.
There were a number of opportunities within the UK and I had interview with BP (the oil company) and for a catalyst company in Germany. However I also had an opportunity to work a L.B foster rail technologies in Vancouver, Canada. I knew nothing about trains but saw it a exciting (bit scary…) opportunity to go and work in another country and get paid to do it!
I was part of small group of chemists responsible for all the chemical issues for the the global company. In particular I was working developing a new grease to that is applied to train tracks to make them more efficient and less noisy saving train companies money.
All in all it was a great trip I learnt loads about how companies work, how sciences fits in and I spent a year exploring Vancouver making some great friends along the way.
