My first study with human volunteers was in 1997 when I worked with elite judo players investigating how they lose weight before competitions

About 10 years ago when I was involved in a study looking at the link between colon cancer and the level of a specific nutrient, selenium, in the blood….I was taking blood sample but also biopsies (small amount of tissue) from the colon of patients with and without cancer.

I first got into research as an undergraduate at university. In our third year we each had to design and run a research project, I looked the effect of endurance training on blood lactate responses in human blood samples….

Back in university was the frst time I worked with human participants in research. We had to design and conduct a support day for an elite athlete and process their results. I also helped out on various staff research projects as well. The most memorable was spending time in the heat chamber with wheelchair athletes testing cooling strategies for the Athens paralympics. so I guess over 10 years now.
