Insulin is a hormone that is made in the Pancreas. It is very important as the body uses it to control the amount of glucose that is in the bloodstream. For example, insulin tells skeletal muscle to take in glucose from the blood and use it as a fuel or store it as glycogen.

Insulin as Andy says is a hormone, it is also a protein, that is why it cannot be taken as a tablet and needs to be injected by people with diabetes.
