      Hello there,

Our lungs are made to work very hard when we smoke because they are trying their best to sieve the clean air (oxygen) for us. When the lung cells are exhausted and can’t cope anymore, they eventually die. But it takes some time to repair that bit, and with constant pressure to work hard as we continue smoking the lungs simply don’t have time and means needed to repair the dying part and can’t cope with this pressure… This is when the disease starts…

Smoke contains lots of chemicals which can change the cells in our lungs, this can mean dirt can be trapped along with bacteria and viruses so infections become more common. It can also damage the DNA in the cells which can lead to mutations and ultimately cancers

The lungs are fantastic as they are delivering the oxygen from the air into the bloodstream so that we can get oxygen to all the organs in the body. When you breath in the smoke is if making the air less pure and making the lungs work harder to get to the oxygen. Then all the pollutants in the smoke once taken out of the air stay stuck in the lungs ad they have no where else to go. When you see photos of lungs from smokers compared to healthy individuals they are black from all the pollutants left behind from the cigarette smoke..
