I am doing a PhD degree right now, which means I am still a student – so in a way I am still a scientist in training! I’m learning how to become a good scientist by working with the other scientists in my lab who have taught me a lot!
I started doing experiments about three years ago when I started my PhD. I wasn’t very good at first, as I didn’t really know what I was doing! But I have learned a lot of new skills and gained a lot of confidence which will help me do well in a future career in science.
But I think you can start thinking like a scientist at any age. The most important thing is curiosity and asking questions and trying to learn new things. Having that frame of mind in place is a very useful skill for a scientist, and you’ve already started by asking us questions!
I got my job as a scientist when I was 21, I started studying physics at uni when I was 17 but I think I’ve kind of always been a scientist.
I’ve always been interested in how things work so I’d try and find out either by reading about it, asking someone or just trying out things which I guess you could say were little experiments.
So I’d say you become a scientist when you start thinking like one by asking questions, solving problems and talking to other people about your ideas.
