      Hello and thanks for the question!

      The ozone layer is important because it acts like a shield for our planet against UV radiation from the sun. So there is lots more UV radiation outside the ozone layer. In fact, scientists think that if the ozone layer were to disappear, the levels of UV radiation might be too high for life to survive very well.

      UV radiation is the reason people get sunburned if they stay out in the sun. Without the ozone layer, you would get a nasty sunburn if you spend even a few minutes in the sun. UV radiation can also damage DNA, which is why people can get skin cancer if they spend too much time in the sun without protection like sun tan lotion. So it would make going outdoors during the day quite a risky business!
