Often! My PhD is about trying to discover something new, so it can often be hard to know how to find the answers. Luckily, science is all about people publishing and sharing the work that they do, and so by reading about what other scientists have done and thinking about how that applies to my own research project, I can generate some good new ideas.
I turn to my more experienced co-workers all the time! The nuclear industry is quite close-knit as people tend to do it for life. This makes it very easy to get your questions answered as someone always knows a guy who knows a guy who knows someone that wrote a paper on what you’re confused about.
I’ve managed to solve most problems I’m faced with but there have been a couple of times where I’m unable to explain the results of a particular experiment. In this case I usually come up with something along the lines of “it probably has something to do with…”. Sometimes you just accept it and move on, other times you carry out more experiments that give you more information that you can use to figure it out or you can ask other scientists around the world if they have similar results or if they have an explanation
