It is a mixture for me. A PhD is a lot about learning how to work independently and think about how to do experiments by yourself. But I’m still part of a lab group, who all have their own individual experiments they focus on. But we also help each other out, and give each other ideas and sometimes work together on the same experiments. My supervisors are also very good at making suggestions and keeping me on the right track.
So, I work on my own stuff, but as part of a team who are trying to figure out the wider picture of the problems we are looking at individually, which is pretty cool.
I do a bit of both. When I do experiments, I usually do them alone. But I’ll also work with customers, doing some training or a demonstrations, and will also do some work with colleagues. I like working with other people, but it’s also good to think independently. I think my job has the right balance.
