The human body can handle quite a bit of radiation without any problems, as there’s a lot of naturally occuring background radiation from rocks, the sun etc.
The nuclear regulations in this country are very strict and our legal limits on dose rates are much, much lower than any levels that could cause you harm.
Besides, my job is all about keeping things safe!
We do have to be careful when using radiation in our work. Before we start we have to read the rules and do some training so that we know how to do our work safely and also know what to do if something goes wrong. As long as I follow the rules I don’t feel scared because I know these rules make sure that my dose is alot less than what is known to hurt people.
I also wear a badge called a dosimeter which measures how much radiation I get so I know if I’m getting too much. Physicists like me and Ellen are asked to give advice on how to keep safe from radiation so we work out how much radiation is involved and what equipment is needed to protect staff if it is too much.
