      No, you should have sex around the time you have ovulation for maximum probability of the sperm actually reaching the egg before they all die.

      The period is when the female body sheds the wall of the uterus which is timed to occur at a point during the ovulation cycle where the egg is not around to be fertilised. Hence there would be nowhere for it to implant. So that point is pretty much the point at which pregnancy is least likely.
