Question: will humans evolve further? cos if the theory of evolution is correct, then we've already evolved out of the weaker prehistoric ape species. if humans will evolve further, how?
We are evolving all the time. We can see it when we study our DNA and compare it to older samples found in very very old human remains. Evolution is a VERY slow process remember so it may never look like it is happening in our own lifetimes but it is. Have a look at this exert from http://www.yourgenome.org/:
One example of recent natural selection in humans involves the ability to tolerate the sugar, lactose, in milk. In most parts of the world, adults are unable to drink milk because their body switches off the intestinal production of lactase, an enzyme that digests the sugar in the milk, after weaning. As these people cannot digest the lactose sugar they suffer symptoms including bloating, abdominal cramps, flatulence, diarrhoea, nausea, or vomiting.
Yet, more than 70 per cent of European adults can quite happily drink milk. This is because they carry a regulatory change in the region of DNA that controls the expression of the gene that codes for lactase. This DNA change enables the lactase gene to be switched on and lactase production to continue, even after weaning. This genetic change appears to have happened between 5,000 and 10,000 years ago, which is around the same time domestication of milk-producing farm animals, such as cows, was established in Europe.
Evolution is an ever ongoing process, but it’s so slow that we don’t realise it.
Humans will continue to evolve further. How will they evolve it’s difficult to say since evolution is affected by the environment and the way we live, as it’s clearly explained by Andy’s example.
Great question, like Andy and Jess say evolution is still going on today. Its hard to see in humans because evolution happens over many generations. We see evolution going on in bacteria all the time as we live much longer than bacteria. As we use an antibiotic, bacteria start to evolve to be resistant (not killed by it). Thats why scientists like Nikki are working to try to come up with new antibiotics.
It depends on what pressures we have on us that make us more or less likely to pass on our genes. It’s not like most of us are in danger of being eaten by animals and so need to run faster or further. This means that less obvious effects are probably in play.
People may still be evolving to be more clever, for example, because clever people earn more money, and can afford better food or possessions that make us more attractive and more likely to have kids.
Thanks for your question. I’m a bit late to the party here and I think I will say the same as everyone else!
Thanks Harriet, that’s right, we do see evolution really quickly in bacteria and are trying in some cases to stop it happening!
Humans will evolve and are evolving but it is very slowly. Who knows what we will be in millions of years?! I like to think we might evolve the ability to communicate telepathically… 🙂 and maybe an extra arm so I can do more stuff at the same time!!
