I think probably Dorothy Hodgkin, she got the nobel prize for developing protein x-ray crystallography ( a way of using x-rays to look at the shape of protein). It was really important in the development of many modern medicines.
From history, that is very hard to answer as they were absolutely ridiculously clever coming up with everything we base all our knowledge on now with the technology they had. I am going to say Dr Ben Goldacre now – A medical doctor, not that well known for ‘scientific discoveries’ but he is an absolute champion for making science ethical.
Oooh great question! Well, I love David Attenborough. He is the king of natural science! There are so many awesome scientists past and present but I would go for Rosalind Franklin. She helped to figure out the structure of DNA which was a major discovery. Also Louis Pasteur and Alexander Flemming. Oh and Stephen Hawking. I need to stop now dont I?!? Too many! 🙂
There are a lot of cool very famous scientists that I like, but I would pick Professor J.J. Gooding, whose research has inspired a lot of my PhD project, and Professor D. Leigh, just because I like his research.
I was lucky to see them both present live!
