No, we have lots of health and safety measures to prevent accidents. I did whack my finger on the bin once when I threw somthing away and broke my knuckle but that wasn’t in the name of science!!
I have cut my finger pretty badly on glass, burnt my arm on a heat gun and got mild carbon monoxide poisoning from a leaky gas cylinder. On the whole its really safe…honest!
I got some cuts from a glass container that exploded from gas pressure. I had a scary near miss when an compound called silane caught fire where I was working. It catches fire when it touches air and produces sand.
Except stabbing myself in the fingers with syringe needles, or touching hot heating plates by accident, I never had anything serious happening to me yet.
It’s really important to always wear lab goggles, gloves and labcoats while doing experiments. Also, being aware of the dangers related to the chemicals you are going to use will assure a smooth and fun laboratory experience.
