I ended up deleting months and months of useful data with two simple letters:

      rm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rm_%28Unix%29)

      🙁

A contractor was working on our computer room’s electrical system, and plugged one of the wires into the wrong place. That overloaded the power supplies on all the computers in the room and they blew. Lots of bangs, lots of smoke, and we had to evacuate the building.

Nobody was hurt, but it did several tens of thousands in damage to the computers.

The computer room in my lab flooded (ground floor, and worst floods in 200 years). All our computer systems were down for 2 days. There were better contingency plans after that — and improvements to the building. It was *not fun* for the techs.
