  Most of our work is in liver cells and small rodents (mice and rats). In liver cells in the culture dish we look for how we might prevent scars from forming in the diseased liver. We then design therapies that we hope will prevent liver scars and test these in rodent models of liver disease. The animals are not in pain and are very well cared for, a vet oversees all our work to make sure no animal suffers.

  I evaluate automated cctv systems. What this means is that I run cctv footage through a system sent to us by a commercial company and test how good they are at detecting things like abandoned bags and intruders. We record all the cctv footage ourselves and even act in it so we know exactly when things happen that we want to be detected automatically. By recording at what times the automatic cctv system sets off an alarm, we can compare these with what the actual results should be and give the system score.
  
  There are all sorts of things we have to do to make sure we can do this accurately and repeatably but that’s the gist of it! We also do it for lots of systems at the same time.

  We test algorithms for their performance, and use the algorithms to develop and test hypotheses relating to biological phenomena of relevance to brain disease.
  
  This comes down to check whether the folding pattern of a schizophrenic brain differs from that of normal people, and how this can be quantified and possibly be used as a diagnostic criterion.
